A local housing projects builder (and former cop) has described the living conditions of indigenous families in Alice Springs as "absolutely horrendous" and said that there's a reason kids don't want to be home and prefer life on the streets.
The guy interviewed sums it up well, that it's a family problem, an environment problem and education problem, where there are no facilities to deal with displaced kids. I'd also add there is an economic dimension to the problem where the (dysfunctional) adults are not purposefully engaged.
