Col Doug Macgregor Ukraine Russia War: Trump's Catastrophe (Daniel Davis)
Col Doug contends that NATO’s “coalition of the willing” is not a demonstration of unity or strength but rather an admission of weakness. Instead of a formidable alliance prepared to confront Russia, what exists is a patchwork of reluctant partners—France, Britain, Germany, and others—whose contributions are token at best. Most offer trucks, medics, or financial aid, but not combat forces. Even Poland, which once committed troops and suffered heavy losses in Ukraine, has now pulled back, with its new leadership refusing to send more soldiers. The underlying reality is that ordinary Europeans have no desire to march east and fight the Russian army; the political and military classes know this, making the deterrent posture hollow.
From Russia’s perspective, the entire conflict is about preventing hostile foreign forces from occupying adjacent territory. Proposals for NATO or coalition forces to hold parts of Ukraine, or to create “neutral zones,” are seen as absurd and unacceptable—akin to the U.S. tolerating foreign armies in northern Mexico after a war. Moscow will reject such settlements outright, because they undermine the very security concerns driving the conflict.
The West avoids admitting this truth, since acknowledging it would mean conceding that the war’s premise was flawed from the beginning. In the speaker’s view, Washington created this crisis, and if the U.S. withdrew from the equation, the war would quickly end. Instead, President Trump—expected by some to pivot toward de-escalation—is doubling down on his predecessor’s policies, pursuing confrontation with Russia over Ukraine and Eastern Europe. This not only raises the likelihood of deeper conflict in Europe but also undermines the possibility of Russian or Chinese cooperation in managing other crises, such as the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.
The critique closes on the idea that U.S. leadership has failed to think through “branches and sequels” (military planning for consequences and contingencies). Neither Washington nor Trump has fully considered the wider implications of their choices, leaving NATO’s position unsustainable, Russia uncompromising, and the world sliding toward multiple simultaneous conflicts.
Pulling out of Ukraine may be impossible politically in the USA (that would lead to assassination), so that allowing the war to continue gives the Russians a chance to stop it militarily. Trump also wants the US to be self sufficient, so burning foreign relationships may be another goal. Furthermore, his current stance undermines the continued manipulate of world events by the neocons. By acting in an over-the-top war-like manner, threatening Russia and supporting Israel to the hilt, Trump seems to be exposing the whole crooked game.
