We Just Found Something in Greece That Rewrites History (Michael Button)

New discoveries in Greece are complicating the story of how humans reached Europe. Some evidence stretches back around 700,000 years, while one fiercely debated skull could point to a much earlier arrival of Homo sapiens than we thought.

So who was there, and what happened to them?



Cool ancient human stuff. As a species we have been around for a fair bit longer than previously guessed. Almost everything made from wood is gone. Over the course of hundreds of thousands of years what sorts of things had been achieved and then erased due to global natural disasters? It's likely that for quite a long time people were living by the sea rather than roaming around the countryside building temporary camps. In the recent past people engaged in hunting and gathering, following their prey, but if there were more sedentary groups living by the sea, during the last few ice ages, all evidence of their existence would now be under water, buried in sediment, or eroded away.
