The Channel migrant crisis is spreading across Britain’s southern coast as people smugglers become “more daring”, a former home secretary has warned.

Illegal crossings have fallen 40 per cent from last year but Suella Braverman told The Telegraph that criminals were adapting quickly to tougher enforcement in France by changing their tactics and routes.

Mrs Braverman visited Portsmouth Harbour on Monday after 120 asylum seekers arrived off its coast in a mega-dinghy on Sunday.

Speaking aboard a boat to highlight the crisis, Mrs Braverman said the crossing “marks a new chapter in this long-standing crisis”.

The migrants set off at 1am on Sunday from Baie de Seine in Normandy, some 200 miles from Calais, to make the 70-mile journey across the Channel, believed to be the longest-ever crossing attempted by “small-boat” people smugglers.

Shadowed by up to five French vessels and two helicopters into British waters, the mega-dinghy was intercepted by two Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeboats and a Border Force vessel south of the Isle of Wight and the migrants brought to shore in Portsmouth.

Their arrival in Britain prompted chaos when protesters waded into the Solent to confront them, before up to 200 people then blocked roads near Eastney Beach in an attempt to stop buses taking the migrants away to be processed at the Home Office’s Manston centre near Dover in Kent. - Telegraph
