The only issue was for them to set things up so that the other countries in the region could be destroyed. It's been a slow process over many decades, with big moves taken at opportune times, like right now.

At the same time there is a real problem with Islamists, where many of worst fanatics are sponsored by the intelligence community to act in proxy wars against more moderate countries, like in Syria, and to generate threats inside Western countries to turn them into war zones.
