The Bombardment of Algiers 1816 - See that slave fleet? I don't want to! (Drachinifel)

Today we look when Admiral Pellew showed up and decided to inconvenience the Barbary State of Algiers by blowing up a good portion of it!



The British putting a dent in the activities of the North African slavers. They acted to stop slaving raids against the UK and other European nations. It worked for a while. 

It must be remembered that nations around the world engaged in all sorts of barbarism and there was nothing particularly different with the Europeans except that they ended up stopping slavery. This does not mean that later European actions during the colonial period were unproblematic. The problem with understanding history is that people think everything outside of Europe was some sort of peaceful wonderland. This idea is very far from the truth.
