Independent comic book creators and economic reality. The bottom line is that you need to produce high quality material (featuring appealing characters with a good story and/or concept) that captures people's imaginations - and be able to promote it. You need to do both. If you promote something that is garbage, or that is very second rate, then it won't be enough. Eric's been great at promotion, and convincing others that getting on board with him will bring results, but the problem is that the finished material needs to be great, and it isn't, particularly from the Eric's flagship publications, and it's turning people away.
