The Internet community will not always tell you what you want to hear. You'll definitely here noisy, and extreme, minority views from both the left and right. It's the wild west. There's a lot of material that can offend. And so you need a thick skin. What's important is that, as a person, you stick to your moral foundations. If you believe strongly in something, defend your views. If your views are faulty, or need to be more nuanced, then modify them. The bottom line is if you are putting out a lot of faulty arguments there's nowhere to hide. The Internet is good for airing honest debates and if you're dishonest you'll cop a LOT of flak.
