Russia Bombs while Trump Rants /Lt Col Daniel Davis

Trump’s Claim on Oil and Putin

Trump argued that if oil prices are forced down, Putin would have “no choice” but to give up the war in Ukraine.

He cited his personal ties with India’s prime minister, noting he was disappointed European nations kept buying Russian oil despite U.S. sanctions.

Trump presented this as a simple cause-and-effect: cheaper oil = Russia quits.

Criticism of Trump’s View

Commentators warn Trump seems to genuinely believe this oversimplification, which ignores history.

Russia has endured massive suffering before (millions dead in WWI, 20–30 million in WWII) without surrendering.

For Russia, Ukraine is seen as existential; no financial or oil-price pressure will compel them to give up. The only way would be total incapacity to continue militarily.

Ukraine Comparison

Ukraine itself is under enormous pressure: devastated economy, relentless bombardment, huge troop losses, and dwindling foreign support.

Despite this, Zelensky refuses to surrender or negotiate—showing that even extreme pressure doesn’t automatically force a government to capitulate.

If Ukraine won’t quit under worse conditions, Russia certainly won’t either.

European Oil Purchases

Trump said he “just found out” Europe is still buying Russian oil. Critics found this shocking—this fact has been widely known for years.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, put on the spot, admitted some EU states were still reliant, but tried to deflect by stressing sanctions and support for Ukraine.

Commentators argue this was embarrassing for both Starmer (cornered) and Trump (appearing ignorant).

Wider Implications

Trump’s approach is seen as unrealistic: expecting the Taliban to grant the U.S. an Afghan base near China’s nukes, or assuming oil prices alone will end Russia’s war.

Such rhetoric damages credibility. Allies and adversaries alike view it as unserious and delusional, pushing more countries toward blocs like BRICS and China’s Belt & Road.

The West risks tying its reputation to a failing Ukraine strategy, while adversaries conclude U.S. leadership lacks coherent, achievable plans
