The problem today is that when issues are not so black and white people will tend to still irrationally side with their 'in group', and whatever (false or misleading) explanation they offer, rather than recognising the objective truth, or tempering their opinion in light of contrarian evidence or views.
For example, when issues are clouded, but hard evidence still exists to prove a point, such as terrorist forces leading the war in Syria, people can reject this truth in favour of whatever their 'in group' says about what's happening - in this case mainstream and the adjacent left leaning media. Often the victim of the lying lacks a frame of reference to see outside the propaganda and so does not meet the asch criteria of denying the evidence of their own eyes (but this is often NOT the case).
