A really good explanation from Alexander, where he points out that nothing has changed on the Russian side. They are against NATO expansion into Ukraine, they want to be the ones to provide security guarantees that would likely involve Ukrainian demilitarisation, and also want to rid the country of Ukrainian extremists. They want all the four Russian populated regions they presently occupy, in totality, and Crimea. If the war continues they'll also take land in the north and possibly Odessa in the south. Russia will not agree to any terms that will lead to war resuming again in the near future. Plus, the US cannot do anything to stop this, short of direct intervention (boots on the ground).
