A federal appeals court has upheld a Canadian government order requiring the mass cull of nearly 400 ostriches at Universal Ostrich Farms in British Columbia after two birds tested positive for H5N1 avian flu in late 2024. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency mandated the slaughter in January, citing national disease-control policy, despite farmers arguing that none of the surviving birds have shown infection in over eight months. The farm’s owners, who fought the order through multiple court challenges, say the flock poses no risk and should instead be studied for potential immunity. The decision has sparked widespread outrage, with supporters organizing protests and international figures voicing opposition to what they call an unnecessary and devastating loss.
