The Trump administration and billionaire ally Elon Musk moved to shutter USAID, an agency supporters say provides crucial aid to fund education and fight starvation overseas but critics argue is little more than a front for the CIA, sparking a showdown with congressional Democrats who blasted the effort as illegal and vowed a court fight.

A.I.D. stands for Agency for International Development. Only a small fraction of its budget actually goes to helping people in need.
