The one million figure is likely their total causalities, to include dead and severely wounded (unable to rejoin the battle). It would not include total casualties in the fight that probably far exceeds 2 million. The real figure for dead is perhaps at, or around, one million considering the amount of fire they're taking from the Russians. The Russian dead is likely around 100,000-150,000 going by the rate of fires between the two sides.
