The Russian tactics seem to be the same as always. They invite the Ukrainians to attack, often via pressure, or via this open area on the border, and then destroy the attackers. It's likely the Russian high command set up what happened. Although the Kursk offensive has cost the Russians a number of people, and their equipment, the Ukrainians are using up a lot of their reserves, and, as usual, continue to throw more resources into the fight. This is the sort of thing you would want in a war of attrition.
