The truth is that not everyone wants WW3 or a hugely escalated conventional war. There are forces that want an escalated war, and other forces, nation States like Russia and China, and even Turkey, and voices in the USA, that don't want to see it happen. Both Iran and Israel are aware of the damage they can do it each other if they do escalate, where the experience of Ukraine shows that Western anti missile defenses are not up to scratch. They'll likely be a bit of tit for tat attacking, although something big, in terms of missile attacks or air strikes from either side can still happen. A lot depends on what the Russians and Chinese may be saying behind the scenes, and the political situation within the USA.
