The simple fact that US troops are occupying territory in Iraq and Syria invites militant action to remove them. US airstrikes only encourage more retaliatory attacks. The reason Iran has stepped in to more heavily influence the region is because of the US war and occupation beginning in 2003. A solution might be to actually redraw the borders in the region to split up the different religious and ethnic groups, and thereafter leave Iran to ally to whomever they choose.

Lets not forget that the Iraqi goverment voted that all US forces was to leave. The US ignored them and is now illegally occupying iraqi territory.

You missed the crucial role of Russia (and of Hezbollah) in defeating ISIS and the US pretending to bomb ISIS before Russia stepped in.

Fun fact. US has been supplying weapons to the same group they claim they fight against. US requested surplus, mostly Soviet era weapons from Eastern European NATO members. They provided them, Jordanian AF transported them and US diatributed them. Totally indiscriminately to all groups, as long they were fighting against Assad, including the group they claimed to be fighting against. Kurdish and Iranian forces seized some of those weapons and Iran requested answers from the countries the weapons were linked to. Our government, along with some others, asked US about that and the answer was it was probably seized in battle and the story was swept under the rug. But the problem was, there were complete shipments in original crates, with paperwork. Not seized in battle, but delivered to them. By US......
