Yes Americans do want normalcy
In regard to Trump promising retribution in his recent speech (see below), people must remember that when Trump took office he was likely threatened. There is nothing stopping the Deep State from killing his family. And so we play stand off blackmail games. It helps to explain certain Trump failures - where he was playing their game, but at the same time telling the truth about a lot of things:
