Putin is popular according to Russian polls. The people in general seem to back the conflict happening in Ukraine because they see it as way to stop direct threats to their country.
Militarily the Russian Army is not trading lives for land. They are holding position and then wiping out entrenched positions of the Ukrainian Army using artillery and then inching forward. Drones are spotting the opposing positions that limits the risk to Russian soldiers. Ritter points out that that the Russians are systematically wiping out the Ukrainian Army. He says the Russians are taking some casualties, but the ratios of lives lost are massively in their favour.
A lot of military bloggers are still buying into the media story that Ukraine is doing well, but Ritter asks, how many recent videos of dead Russians are you seeing online? On the other hand you can see lots of images now of dead Ukrainians and their equipment.
The end of the conflict will likely be the partitioning of the Ukraine, though the war or through negotiation.
