Manga basically gets the best of all worlds: They get merchandising, they get the book sales, and they get their animated (and sometimes live action) series.

Western companies for whatever reason only ever focus on the merchandising, not realizing that merchandizing is basically the fruit of a tree, and they only care about the fruit; more than happy to let the tree wither and die. Course the insane part is that they'll happily give the tree away to a lumberjack so long as they get to keep the fruit.
