An expanded war, involving the USA, is what Netanyahu wants. It's obvious that the neighbouring Arab countries are stronger than ever, in terms of fighting spirit and anti armour weapons, and the Israeli long term agenda is to wipe these people out. The only way the Israelis can prevail is through nuclear and chemical weapons or via the introduction of the US military. If they back off now, they'll have to deal with negative world sentiment and even stronger enemies in the future.
One thing that can change world sentiment in favour of Israel is massed jihadist terror attacks in Western countries. The situation would be a terrorist war inside Western countries alongside Israel's war against its neighbours. This scenario is likely why mass migration of fighting aged males into the West has been dramatically accelerated in recent years (or at least part of the equation).
