Two things you said were completely on target for why this hole is now near-impossible for the big 2 to climb out of: New fans of the billion-dollar movies going into comic shop and seeing nothing familiar, unlike, say, in January of 1966 when kids wanted Batman comics got exactly what was on TV.
2. It really hit home for me when you said it's been like this for 15 years. FIFTEEN years! That's a generation's worth of fans who will now grow up and not pass any tradition of reading comics onto THEIR kids. Like Disney with Star Wars, they broke the chain. It's hard to rebuild buzz back up after such decimation.

You've mentioned it before, but I really think we don't focus enough on the fact that they presided over superhero comics during the superhero boom. Superheroes were the most popular things on earth for like a decade. They should have been selling 10x the numbers they did in the early 90s! Instead, they imploded. What a wasted opportunity, since it seems like superheroes are starting to go out of style again. They may never get that chance again. Any industry that fails at a time when its products are the most popular thing on earth deserves to die.
Imagine sales of The Lord of the Rings books declining substantially after Peter Jackson's trilogy came out. It's fucking absurd.

The quotes around “save” are the hilarious part. This is why nothing’s going to change. If these freaks wanted a “next generation” they really should have spent the last decade making actual comic books, not therapy sessions or Netflix content.
