Higher education, elite education, needs to be merit based to maintain certain standards, especially in the STEM fields. When you have second rate engineers then the chances of failure, and death, increases. In non critical studies the calibre of analysis is lowered, and you can get highly politically minded students and academics rather than those who are more objectively analytical.
